Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Reigning Olympic champion Shawn Johnson has announced her retirement from gymnastics. The American won four medals at the Beijing 2008 Games, including gold in the balance beam.

The 20-year-old has had problems with injuries ever since, tearing left knee ligaments in a skiing accident in 2010, and said it has progressively got worse.

"My body is at the point where I need time to rest and retire so I can be healthy for the rest of my life," she said. Johnson continued to soar after Beijing, earning celebrity status in the US after winning 'Dancing With The Stars'.

WHO'S UP?

Craig Bellamy. The Liverpool striker has hinted at his inclusion in the Team GB football squad. "I'm supposed to keep it quiet," he said.

WHO'S DOWN?

Emma Snowsill. The Beijing triathlon gold medallist has been left out of the Australia squad for London.

Swimmer Eric "The Eel" Moussambani recorded a time of 1min 52.72sec in a 100m freestyle heat at the 2000 Sydney Games.
