Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

In riding to victory in the Paris-Nice stage race last weekend, Bradley Wiggins not only strengthened his credentials as a major force in global cycling; he followed in the tracks of the late, great Tom Simpson, the only previous British winner of the race.

Simpson won in 1967 but four months later collapsed and died on the slopes of Mont Ventoux in the Tour de France.

Wiggins finished fourth in the 2009 Tour, and when he climbed the Ventoux he had a picture of Simpson glued to his bike frame.

What's coming up...

Athletics: Oscar Pistorius runs his first 400m race of 2012 in the South African Provincial Championships in Pretoria tomorrow. On 15 April, Paula Radcliffe will race for the first time this year in the Vienna City half-marathon, in which she will be chased by Haile Gebrselassie in a special "Catch me if you can" competition.

Who's up?

Yamile Aldama: Cuban-born but a London resident for 11 years, the triple jumper, 39, was Britain's only gold medal winner at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Istanbul.

Christine Ohuruogu: Britain's only reigning Olympic track champion returned to form with a stunning third leg for the winning GB 4x400m relay team in Istanbul.

Who's down?

Tatyana Chernova: Beat Jessica Ennis in the heptathlon at last year's World Championships, but the Russian was joint-fourth in the pentathlon in Istanbul.

Mo Farah: The Midas touch of 2011 eluded the world 5,000m champion as he finished fourth in the 3,000m in Istanbul.
