Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The IAAF senior vice-president Bob Hersh expressed his relief that Olympic Stadium issues have been resolved with a "cast-iron guarantee" and praised London's bid for the 2017 World Championships yesterday.
Tottenham Hotspur and Leyton Orient are each seeking a judicial review of the decision to award the Olympic Stadium to West Ham United after the London 2012 Games, which will be heard on 18 October, but inspectors were told by the Government that the running track will remain in place at the stadium regardless of whether Spurs win their court action.
The Sports Minister, Hugh Robertson, yesterday labelled Spurs' bid as "completely pointless" given that their chairman, Daniel Levy, had expressed his intention to remain in north London. "He has had a full and final offer from [London mayor] Boris [Johnson, to stay in Tottenham] and I think it is now completely pointless keeping that judicial review in place."
Hersh said: "Based on our very good meeting yesterday and upon the assurances we have had from the Government and the way in which it has addressed the legal state of affairs and the legal possibilities, we are satisfied."
