Team GB’s Dina Asher-Smith got her Olympic bid underway on Friday in the 100m heats where she qualified for the semi-finals.

The 25-year-old came second in her heat, running a time of 11.07 seconds, which made her the joint-11th fastest qualifier. She lost to American Teahna Daniels who ran it in 11.04s.

It was Asher-Smith’s first defeat of the year but she will have her eyes on the prize as she gears up to book her spot in the final.

Her strongest opponents, Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Elaine Thompson-Herah, will join the Briton in the semis as they both qualified. Fraser-Pryce came first in her heat with a 10.84s time and Thompson-Herah topped hers after running 10.82s.

Asher-Smith will compete in the 100m semi-final on Saturday.

She will be in the first of three semis, all of which are happening on Saturday, starting at 11.15am BST.

The star will come up against Thompson-Herah in the semi, which may urge her onto a faster time.

They will also run against Canada’s Khamica Bingham, the Bahamas’ Tynia Gaither, Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare, Switzerland’s Ajla del Ponte, America’s Jenna Prandini and Germany’s Tatjana Pinto.

Fraser-Pryce is in the third semi-final, which will take place at 11.30am BST.

The top eight runners across all three semis will qualify for the final.
