Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Karen Pickering, a 20-year-old from Ipswich, swims in the 200 metres freestyle today (heats at 8.30am, final at 5.0pm) and might sneak a medal. She set a record last year when she won all five freestyle titles from 50m to 800m in the national shortcourse championships, but has yet to prove a big fish in the international pool.

Alongside the swimming, the men's platform finals in the diving take place without Greg Louganis, the man who has dominated the sport since 1984. The American won gold in both the springboard and highboard events at Los Angeles and Seoul but retired with a tidy crock of four gold medals. The field is difficult to assess, although the Chinese should prove strong. Four years ago they monopolised the women's events; this time their supremacy will probably extend to both sexes.

In rowing, Britain's Fiona Freckleton and Miriam Batten, bronze medallists in last year's world championships, begin their campaign in the women's coxless pairs. If it is successful they will become the first British women sculling medallists since Beryl Mitchell in 1980.
