Your support makes all the difference.Aldershot Town, seeking a full-time new manager, are pursuing Woking's Geoff Chapple as a replacement for Steve Wignall. After 10 years at the Surrey club, Chapple is in his testimonial season, but he may find the lure of the ambitious Diadora Lea gue outfit hard to resist.
Wignall, who took over at Colchester United last week, has been replaced on a temporary basis by his assistant, Paul Shrubb, the former Brentford and Aldershot defender, who has his own business and does not want to keep the manager's job.
Although Woking are second in the GM Vauxhall Conference, the limitations of their Kingfield Stadium mean that promotion to the Endsleigh League is beyond their reach for the forseeable future. Aldershot Town, who have enjoyed two successive promotion campaigns, are unlikely to face such problems at the Recreation Ground. They have been given permission by Woking to approach Chapple, and it is understood that he heads a short-list of about six.
Woking's Conference rivals, Dagenham and Redbridge, have signed Perry Groves, the former Southampton, Arsenal and Colchester forward. Injury has obliged the 29-year-old to retire from the full-time game. Roy McDonough, the ex-Colchester player-manager, has left Dagenham to join Bishop's Stortford.
Another experienced performer joining the non-League ranks is Detzi Kruszynski, the former Wimbledon midfielder, who makes his debut for St Albans City in tomorrow's FA Umbro Trophy game at home to Kidderminster Harriers.
The match at Clarence Park is among the pick of the first-round ties. Upsets are likely at Bamber Bridge v Halifax and Hednesford v Altrincham, while Woking, the holders, entertain Chesham. West Auckland's home tie against Macclesfield, the Conference leaders, has been switched to Moss Rose, Macclesfield's ground.
