Your support makes all the difference.India, who pushed England into sixth place in the World Cup in Sydney by beating them 1-0 in their last meeting, were held to a 1-1 draw yesterday by a youthful England team in their second game in the Eight Nations Indira Gandhi Tournament in NewDelhi.
The hard-working Edward Aranha put India ahead in the 53rd minute, Mukesh Kumar sending Dhanraj Pillay away through the English defence to create the opening. Indian joy was short-lived as Calum Giles claimed his first international goal from England's seventh penalty corner in the 62nd minute, his previous corner having hit the crossbar.
England lifted the pace and put the Indian defence under considerable pressure, the game ending with drama in the Indian goalmouth. Another Giles penalty had been cleared off the line and as Bobby Crutchley volleyed home what could have been a sensational winner the umpire blew for Indian dangerous play. England could make nothing from the resultant penalty corner and that was that.
Ian Morrison, winning his first cap, was sound in defence, with Simon Mason again outstanding in goal and named player of the match.
Earlier, Kazakhstan came from behind to beat Malaysia 3-2 to claim the first semi-final place. England need to beat Malaysia tomorrow, with Kazakhstan beating India, if they are to progress.
