Colin Kaepernick called for continued protests against racial injustice and police brutality in the US after being awarded the W.E.B. Du Bois Medal by Harvard University yesterday.

The former NFL quarterback has been unsigned to any team since March 2017 after instigating the kneeling protest during the pre-match renditions of the national anthem and is currently engaged in a battle with team owners who he alleges have collaborated to keep him out of the sport.

"I feel it's not only my responsibility but all of our responsibilities that as people who are in positions of privilege, in positions of power, we continue to fight for them, uplift them, empower them,” the 30-year-old told the audience at the renowned university.

"If we don't, we become complicit in the problem."

Rumours have however swirled in the past weeks that Kaepernick, who recently fronted Nike's new campaign 'Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything', may be on the brink of returning to the sport amid links to the New York Giants.
