Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

TONY McCOY, who was banned for the second time in 24 hours at Worcester on Saturday, will not appeal against the decision. McCoy was suspended for three days for easing down prematurely on the 9-4 favourite Galix, who finished sixth in a selling hurdle. The champion jockey stopped riding as his mount tired at the final flight

McCoy's latest suspension was added to the four-day ban he was given for excessive use of the whip at Bangor on Friday.

"I won't be appealing against the suspension as there's not really anybody to appeal to, so there's not really any point," McCoy said. "The stewards obviously took no notice of Galix's previous form. I eased the horse when it was beaten and did what I thought was the best thing to do on the fast ground with the horse's welfare paramount in my mind.

"Soon I'll only have to walk on a racecourse to be done for something or other. I got four days for using my whip with excessive force at Bangor on Friday and 24 hours later I'm given another three days for making insufficient effort - does that make sense to you?"

He is banned every day on which there is jump racing in Britain from Saturday until 21 August.
