From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.A video has emerged on the internet showing the moment that Jules Bianchi collided with a recovery vehicle during the Japanese Grand Prix that has left the Marussia driver with severe head injuries.
The Frenchman has undergone an operation at the Mie Prefectural General Medical Centre in Yokkaichi to alleviate a subdural haematoma, and his condition has been described by FIA media delegate Matteo Bonciani as “critical but stable”.
Bianchi’s crash happened in the closing stages of the race at Suzuka that had been hit by extreme weather on Sunday. There were fears that Typhoon Phanfone, which was on course to hit Japan, would cause the race to be delayed or abandoned, but it went ahead and up until Bianchi’s accident had been relatively accident-free.
However, Adrian Sutil spun off the track late-on and collided with the tyre barrier at turn seven, but despite marshals and a recovery vehicle taking to the track FIA chief director Charlie Whiting elected not to deploy the safety car. Instead, double-waved yellow flags were used to neutralise the section where the crash had occurred.
As the recovery truck reversed to make its way off the track, Bianchi’s Marussia can be seen to come into shot at speed and pointing in the opposite direction to where the track runs, giving the impression that he was not in control at this point.
