Sam Norris suffered an accident while racing in the 23rd heat of the British Youth Championship as Glasgow’s Peugeot Ashfield Stadium at the weekend, and was transferred to hospital with a “serious brain injury”.
The teenager wears the number eight for Midenhall Fen Tigers, and he was expected to feature on rides throughout the season.
The remainder of the event was cancelled following the accident, and his family posted an update on Facebook to reveal the seriousness of his injuries.
"Sam is now at paediatric intensive care unit in Glasgow, he has a serious brain injury, the staff are observing his condition. He's on life support. Thank to all concerned and please pray for him to get well. Claire and Chris," the post read.
The Young Lions, the British Youth Speedway team for which Norris was racing at the event, posted their best wishes on Twitter.
They wrote: "Sorry for the slow response to everyone's kind messages, but British Youth 250cc Rider Sam Norris is in a serious condition in the Glasgow Hospital, after a crash at the Youth Round on Sunday afternoon.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Sam and his family at this time."
Meanwhile, fellow riders offered their support, with 2016 British champion Danny King tweeting: "Never nice hearing the news of a fellow rider suffering an injury.
"My thoughts and prayers go out to Sam Norris and his family at this difficult time. #keepfightingsam #inourthoughts."
