England's women showed encouraging signs that the groundwork for the defence of their European Nations's Cup next month is proceeding satisfactorily in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Germany, writes Bill Colwill from Sheffield.
The match was the focal point of the All England Women's Hockey Association Centenary, and so the result, caused by Nadine Ernsting-Krienke giving Germany a 43rd-minute lead and Tammy Miller equalising for England in the 50th, was relatively unimportant - the occasion was what mattered.
Both teams contributed to some marvellous moments to entertain the capacity crowd, particularly in the second half.
England's coach, Maggie Souyave, was pleased with her squad's fightback although she will be aware that the defence looked cumbersome and the forwards did not take full advantages of all the chances that came their way.
