Liverpool will seek compensation from the Association with a bill to make up for losing Jamie Redknapp with a badly damaged ankle against South Africa on Saturday.
Redknapp, who suffered a fracture and ligament damage, is likely to miss the start of next season after a tackle from Phil Masinga. It is the second time he has been injured in internationals - he tore his hamstring after six minutes of the game against Switzerland in November 1995 - and comes only days after the England coach, Glenn Hoddle, criticised the Liverpool manager Roy Evans for pulling Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman out of his squad.
Liverpool believe they are entitled to expect the FA to pay Redknapp's wages, estimated at pounds 12,000 a week. There is also a case for more money, as their transfer plans have been disrupted.
Redknapp's injury puts Evans in a predicament. He was looking for signings in midfield to play beside him and has already targeted Wimbledon's Oyvind Leonhardsen. He was in Monaco on Saturday watching the midfield schemer Ali Benarbia, a potential replacement for John Barnes, but with Redknapp out his priorities will change and Barnes may still be required.
"I'm devastated for Jamie and his family," Hoddle said. "He's had wretched bad luck when it comes to playing for England."
An elbow injury has forced Middlesbrough's goalkeeper Ben Roberts out of the England Under-21 squad for Friday's European Championship qualifier in Poland. Coach Peter Taylor is unlikely to call up any replacements, because Crystal Palace's Chris Day and Andy Marshall, of Norwich, are both in his party for the game in Katowice.
