Sir: If there is any good to come out of the inept performance of the England football team, and the debacle that will follow on our cricket fields this summer, let us hope it is in the realisation that so long as we eschew the values of flair, creativity and intuition in favour of hard work, doggedness, and reliability, then the misery on our sports fields will mirror the misery off it. It is surely preferable that, like art forms at their best, sport should be a beacon of inspiration. Are we as a nation ready for that?
