Sir: In response to Alison Elliott (Sports Letters, 3 June). Batters are batters in Yorkshire and occasionally batsmen. I imagine Len Hutton called them whatever. Unless, in later life he became embroiled in the middle-class pretensions that are added to the game down south and find no favour in the spiritual home of English cricket. I doubt that.
