Lengthy recovery for Briton

Chris Boardman, recovering in hospital after his spectacular crash in the Tour de France, is likely to be out of action for six weeks before starting a slow comeback.

On Sunday night, the Olympic and world champion had a 90-minute operation on a double fracture of his left ankle, where two screws were inserted. The fracture of his right wrist is less serious, although it means he will be unable to use crutches properly and he could be immobile for seven to 10 days.

"This is a real setback for Chris when he had so much to look forward to," his business associate, Peter Woodworth, said. "The wrist is a clean break, but the ankle is complicated, especially for a cyclist. It is likely to be at least five or six weeks before Chris can think about getting back."

Boardman's wife, Sally-Ann, said: "My heart was in my mouth when I saw the crash on television. I thought the team car had hit his head. Chris was obviously disappointed when he flew back, but he knew it could have been a lot worse. Knowing him as I do, he will be back in action as soon as possible - hopefully for his next major target, the World Championships in October."
