Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Bobby Goulding, the St Helens scrum-half, has been accused of spitting, swearing and gesturing at Leeds supporters during his side's victory at Headingley on Wednesday night, writes Dave Hadfield.

The Rugby League is studying reports from both clubs and from the police, who took statements from between 20 and 30 fans, as well as watching the match video in order to determine whether Goulding has a case to answer.

The allegation from Leeds is that, after creating the try that ensured his former club would be beaten, Goulding went towards spectators in the family enclosure, made obscene gestures and remarks and spat over them after drinking from a water bottle. Goulding was keeping quiet yesterday on the advice of his club.

The League was endeavouring last night to prevent the demise of Doncaster. Even though the administrators running the troubled South Yorkshire club seem determined to liquidate them, the League is equally determined to prop up some sort of operation - at least to fulfil the club's fixtures until the end of the season.

Brendon Tuuta, the Featherstone Rovers forward, has been charged with assault in connection with an incident as he left the field following a First Division match at Workington last month.
