Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Julie Krone, the racing world's most successful female jockey, narrowly escaped serious injury yesterday when her horse broke down during a race. The, 31-year-old had returned to riding only the previous week following surgery to repair an ankle s hattered in a fall.
The injuries occured when her mount in a 11/2-mile race at Gulfstream Park, Florida, Saratoga Source, snapped his right foreleg and crashed to the ground. Krone fell to the track immediately and the horse appeared to roll over her.
Krone, winner of the 1993 Belmont Stakes and Gulfstream's leading jockey, was taken to the Memorial Hospital in Hollywood, Florida, where she was described as being "in fair condition".
"I'm OK, but I just can't hold the phone," Krone said from the emergency room. She said she was "comfortable" and in little pain.
Three other riders - Dave Penna, Heberto Castillo Jr. and Katy Sweeney - also fell but were unhurt and rode again later in the day.
Krone, the only woman jockey to win an American Triple Crown race, severely fractured her right ankle in a three-horse spill at Saratoga in Aug 1993. She resumed riding last May but was sidelined again in a fall when she required further surgery to remove two plates and 13 screws from her ankle.
Her mount, Saratoga Source, was destroyed on the track.
