european football Juventus, the Serie A leaders, were brought down to earth in the Sant'Elia stadium yesterday, as they crashed to a shock 3-0 defeat at Cagliari, ending their nine-match unbeaten run. Luis Oliveira scored the first of Cagliari's two spotkicks in the seventh minute, and a goal from the Panamanian striker, Julio Dely Valdes, separated the penalties.

Parma kept up the pressure on Juventus, with their beleaguered striker, Faustino Asprilla, scoring the first goal of a 2-0 victory over Napoli, narrowing the gap at the top to one point. third-placed Lazio stay in touch following their 1-0 win over Brescia.

Internazionale lost 1-0 at Padova, and look to be slipping towards the relegation area. Roma were held to a 1-1 draw at the Olympic Stadium by Cremonese, while the defending champions, Milan, continued their resurgence in form by beating Fiorentina 2-0.

The Fiorentina president, Cecchi Gori, said yesterday that his club would retain the German midfielder, Stefan Effenberg, who was expelled from the German squad at last year's World Cup finals after making an obscene gesture to fans. Effenberg has flourished in the Bundesliga since going on loan to Borussia Monchengladbach.

In Spain, the 17-year-old Raul Gonzalez scored twice in Real Madrid's 4-0 thrashing of Celta Vigo to keep them three points ahead of Real Zaragoza and Deportivo la Coruna.

Lyon beat Cannes 3-1 on Saturday to move from sixth to third place in the French League, as the country's two top sides, the leaders, Nantes, and reigning champions, Paris St-Germain, had the weekend off.St Etienne beat Bordeaux 2-1 in an ill-tempered match in which St Etienne's Polish international midfielder, Piotr Swierzczewski, had his nose broken.

Roda JC Kerkrade made a brief return to the top of the Dutch League on Saturday, but Ajax's 1-0 over PSV Eindhoven yesterday sent the Amsterdam club back to the top. Patrick Kluivert scored a late winner from the penalty spot.
