Ivankov retains European title

Ivan Ivankov, of Belarus, retained his European gymnastics title with a narrow victory over his compatriot Vitaly Scherbo in yesterday's individual competition in Copenhagen. Ivankov notched 57.898 points, while Scherbo, who won five gold medals at the 1992 Olympics, scored 57.874 points. Russia's Alexei Voropaev took the bronze in the six-apparatus event on 57.536. Britain's Lee McDermott finished joint 14th, while Dominic Brindle was 22nd.
