Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Sampdoria made an impressive start to the game, with Attilio Lombardo, recalled yesterday by Arrigo Sacchi to the Italian squad, going close. Once Roma had overcome their early nerves, Zenga was kept busy by their South American strikeforce of Daniel Fonseca and Abel Balbo, who eventually scored his fifth goal in four games.
Gianfranco Zola and Marco Branca ensured that Parma returned to the top of the table on goal difference after beating struggling Torino 2-0. Milan stay in touch with the leaders after beating Brescia 1-0, but Juventus lost the chance to share top spot, drawing 0-0 with Internazionale, despite welcoming back Roberto Baggio.
A last-minute header by Cristiano Bergodi earned Lazio a point against Fiorentina, despite being down to 10 men after having their Argentine defender, Jose Chamot, sent off in the first half for obstruction. His World Cup team-mate, Gabriel Batistuta, increased his goal tally to six, making him the leading scorer in Serie A.
Padova moved off the bottom of the table after earning their first point of the season, drawing 3-3 in an ill-tempered game against Napoli. Padova's Roberto Putelli was sent off in the 40th minute, followed four minutes later by Fabio Cannavaro of Napoli and Padova's Maurizio Coppola, who were dismissed for fighting.
Reggiana now prop up Serie A after their 3-1 defeat at Genoa. Foggia beat Cremonese 3-1, while Bari held Cagliari to a goalless draw.
