Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Pirates made life difficult for themselves when their import, Jamie Penner, was sent off at the half-way stage for abuse and was followed by team-mate, Dale Jago, with 13 minutes left for high sticking. Jets were 4-2 up at the end of the first period and 8-4 at the end of the second with the scoring led by the Stefan brothers, Gary and Joe, but the plaudits went to Nicky Cross, a home-grown player who showed his class up front.
Jets are joined from their regional group by Nottingham Panthers and Humberside Seahawks, while Whitley Warriors are through from their quartet, leaving Teesside Bombers and Milton Keynes Kings behind.
Only one group remains locked, with Murrayfield Racers, Durham Wasps and Sheffield Steelers equal on points. Racers were 5-1 down at Sheffield but, led by Frank Norris and Chris Palmer, they caught up with five unanswered goals to win 6-5. Tony Hand scored the winner with three minutes to go.
Wasps, who beat Fife Flyers 7-6 on Saturday to eliminate the Scottish side from the Cup, then defeated Racers 8-5.
Cardiff Devils, the Cup holders, scored four goals in a two-minute period near the end of their 13-8 victory over Swindon Wildcats.
On Sunday the Devils carried on where they had left off and brushed aside Bracknell Bees 16-4, although the scoreline did not do the Bees justice. But eight Devils goals in 12 minutes, the last three in the space of 30 seconds, made it a miserable day for the goaltender Gary Brine, who was replaced by Marc Dowd. It made no difference as Devils continued their onslaught and now move into the last eight. They are also the only team with a 100 per cent Cup record.
