Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

JANE SIXSMITH was in impressive form in Madrid yesterday as she helped England beat the Olympic champions, Spain, 4-0 in their third successive victory over the gold medallists, writes Bill Colwill.

Sixsmith put the visitors ahead in the third minute, deflecting a free-hit from Tammy Miller. A few minutes later, Sixsmith set up England's second goal in the 18th minute for Jane Smith. Tina Cullen picked up a rebound from a Johnson corner strike after the interval for the third and Johnson got the fourth in the 47th minute from another penalty corner.

Lancashire won the Women's County Championship at Milton Keynes yesterday for the fourth successive year but they had to wait until the second round of sudden-death penalty strokes after drawing 1-1 with Staffordshire.

Loraine Marsden put the holders ahead with an exquisitely placed penalty corner shot in the 20th minute. Six minutes later Staffordshire equalised, Jenny Cordon, their captain, converted a penalty stroke after some typically tantalising stick work by Jane Swinnerton had induced a rash tackle.

An incisive reverse stick pass by Lancashire's captain, Maggie Souyave, was nearly turned in by Julie Aspin, but penalty strokes prevailed. Linda Carr scored the decisive goal to make it 5-4 on penalties.
