IT WAS a bleak day for the home countries at the women's under-21 European Cup here yesterday. Ireland were overwhelmed 7-0 by a German team smarting from losing their opening match 2-1 to the Netherlands, while Scotland succumbed 4-0 to a virtuoso performance by the Dutch.
Ireland suffered severe German pressure in the first half and were indebted to their goalkeeper Heather McCulloch, but were still three down by the interval. Philippa Suxdorf slotted in a corner rebound and Cornelia Schmidt added another from a corner. A superb advantage by the English umpire Jane Nockolds enabled Vanesa Schmoranzer to score the third goal following a foul on Andrea Feuerstack, the most dangerous German forward.
The introduction of Miriam Daly at half-time revitalised the Irish attack, but just when Germany seemed to be wilting Inga Moller cut through the middle and fired in the fourth goal. Stefanie Krauss, the German sweeper, scored from their eighth corner and added another from open play before Feuerstack completed the scoring.
The winds that blew around Cramond were nothing compared with the whirlwind Netherlands attack in the opening minutes.
Jeanette Lewin steered a right-wing cross into the goal to open the scoring and although Jane Burley saved a penalty corner from Ageeth Broomgaardt on the line, Broomgaardt converted her next attempt, all this within five minutes.
Irvy Sheepstra added a third just before half-time but a spirited second-half performance by the Scots limited the Netherlands to one more goal, Lewin following up after Broomgaardt hit the post from a corner.
