East Grinstead's wretched weekend ended on a winning note when they beat Royal White Star, from Belgium, 6-3 to avoid the wooden spoon.
However, having lost the first cross-over game 6-5 against Menzieshill, the Scottish champions, East Grinstead were unable to prevent the relegation of St Albans, the English champions, to next year's B division.
Against the Scots, there was never more than a goal between the sides, Ken Stibbles scoring the winner inside the last minute.
In their final game, East Grinstead owed much to the aggression of Richard Leman, who scored twice in four minutes in the second half. Marc Zander also notched a couple to put the game out of the reach of the Belgians, while Jon Clark made a couple of outstanding saves to keep the Sussex side in the game.
Menzieshill's gallant attempt to win their final game and thus remain in the top division suffered from the absence of John Christie, who was injured playing against East Grinstead, and they went down 7-4 to Montrouge.
In an all-German women's final in Russelsheim, meanwhile, the host club regained their title from Berliner, Britta Becker collecting a hat-trick.
