Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

ENGLAND finished their preparations at Milton Keynes last night for next week's World Cup in Utrecht with contrasting results but with both the men and the women in confident mood. The men beat New Zealand for the second time in two days - 2-0 - while the women, following their 2-2 draw with Australia, the world and Olympic champions, lost 5-2 to them yesterday but were not disgraced.

Jane Sixsmith, the golden girl of English hockey playing in her 150th international, scored one of the goals with the other coming from Purdy Miller, who deflected Kerry Moore's hard shot into the roof of the net.

The men's win against New Zealand followed up their 5-3 victory on Tuesday. England opened the scoring with just 55 seconds left of the first half from their third penalty corner, Jason Lee scoring on the slip. In the second half Nick Thompson scored their second.
