Hockey: Cullen inspires England win
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.TINA CULLEN, with a brilliant solo goal a minute into the second half, put England on their way to a well-merited 2-1 win against Australia yesterday in Toowoomba, south-west of Brisbane, in the first of their three-match Test series. England's victory against the reigning Olympic, world and Commonwealth champions went some way to compensate for the 8- 1 defeat when the teams last met in Kuala Lumpur in the Commonwealth Games final.
After a goalless first half, Mel Clewlow, who scored England's only goal in September, sent a long clearance out of defence which found Cullen unmarked on the half-way line. She tore through the Australian defence and slipped the ball in.
Slough's Jane Smith extended the lead 10 minutes later at one of only three England penalty corners with a cool conversion.
Australia responded within two minutes when a momentary lapse of concentration in the England defence allowed Katrina Powell a shot from the edge of the circle to beat Carolyn Reid. The Australians now tore into England, mounting considerable pressure in the closing minutes as they strove for the equaliser.
However, England's defence held firm with Clewlow, Lorraine Catchpole and Reid the pick of a solid team performance as they coped confidently with the assault, holding out for a rare but deserved victory.
The result was a big disappointment to the Australian coach, Ric Charlesworth, who was celebrating his 200th game in charge, and this was only his 22nd defeat.
Charlesworth, an ex-Australian captain, doctor of medicine and former Australian MP, has announced that he will end his successful eight-year reign as coach after next year's Sydney Olympics. As coach he has won two world titles, plus Olympic gold in Atlanta in 1996.
The teams move on to Brisbane for the second Test tomorrow.
