Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Bobby Crutchley, with hat-tricks on Saturday and Sunday, kept Cannock on course for the League and Cup double with two convincing wins.

In the League on Saturday, Cannock ran out 5-2 winners against a lethargic Southgate by doing the simple things well and scoring goals when it mattered. Yesterday in their Cup quarter-final game at Thames Ditton against non- National League Old Cranleighans, they came from behind to win 11-2 before a large crowd.

A John Reed penalty corner after seven minutes gave the Old Boys the lead but only after their goalkeeper, Matt Miles, had made a couple of fine saves at penalty corners. Miles was in excellent form as he nonchalantly repelled corner after corner.

After Craig Parnham had equalised in the 15th minute goals for the Premier side came at regular intervals with England striker Crutchley collecting his goals and his international colleague Chris Mayer a further three.

Non-League Chichester, with two goals from Andrew Savoury and a third from Henry Stremes, came from behind to spring the surprise of the round by beating visiting Stourport 3-1.

Mike Renison, with a penalty corner goal after four minutes, gave Brooklands a 1-0 victory over Oxford University and with Surbiton going down 2-0 at home to Bromley, Russell Beresford scoring twice, Brooklands have taken over the Division One leadership.

England's women took the silver medal in the European Indoor Nations Cup in Orense, Spain after being beaten by Germany 8-0 in the final. Scotland finished fourth, losing 3-1 to Austria in the bronze medal game.

England's young and depleted squad were no match for the Germans, particularly with their first choice six playing. There was no doubt of the outcome after Britta Becker had opened the scoring in the ninth minute with the first of her five goals.

England's heroine of the semi-final win on a penalty shoot-out over Austria, Denise Marston-Smith, who scored all three goals in the 3-3 draw and the winning stroke in sudden death, failed to get on the score sheet.
