From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

IAIN RANDALL celebrated his 22nd birthday in style yesterday as he registered only his third National League goal when he scored in the third minute of Beeston's home game against East Grinstead.

Randall may go on to score many more goals but they are unlikely to be as important as yesterday's which set his club on to a 2-1 win to retain their Premier League position. Mike Huckle got the second in the 20th minute with Jason Collins getting Grinstead's goal with five minutes remaining.

Barford Tigers, with goals from Hamandeep Sanghera, Dharminder Singh and Armarjit Degun, beat Hounslow 3-0 but, with Beeston winning, are relegated along with Doncaster. Doncaster, in spite of two goals from Simon Moffatt, went down 3-2 at home to Guildford for whom Ian Jennings scored a couple from penalty corners and Danny Hall collected the third.

Southgate opened their new ground at Trent Park, after 10 years of planning and talking, with a splendid exhibition of attacking hockey to beat a depleted Reading 6-1. Reading, with their captain Jon Wyatt out with an injury, were a poor imitation of the side which had challenged for the title most of the season.

The German international Eiko Rott scored twice and England's captain, Bill Waugh, also notched a couple. Duncan Woods, recently discarded by England, who must have impressed the watching England coach, Barry Dancer, and Mark Sully completed the scoring.

It was a clean sweep for England in the men and women's Under-18 and Under-16 Youth tournaments in Dublin and Cardiff.
