Canterbury's David Mathews scored three times to complete his sixth hat- trick of the season and take his tally to 25 goals in 10 games. His side hung on for a 3-3 draw, and with Guildford going down 2-1 to Cannock, Canterbury climbed into second place ahead of the Surrey club.
Reading were also up against it in the Cup yesterday. The defending holders needed a golden goal from Scott Ashdown in the 79th minute to beat Surbiton 4-3 and move into the fifth round of this year's competition. Reading were all but out when, with 32 seconds of normal time remaining, Jonathan Loose scored his second goal and force extra-time.
Canterbury recalled their manager, the 39-year-old Sean Kerly, who obliged with their third goal in a 3-1 victory away at Bournville.
Tina Cullen scored three times as Hightown took over the leadership of the Women's Premier in a 4 -0 win against Chelmsford. Without Cullen in yesterday's third-round cup game, Hightown thrashed Dudley 14-0. But in the match of the day, Ipswich, who on Saturday had been held to a 3-3 draw at Canterbury, went out to a golden goal at Clifton. Lucy Culliford scored in the 81st minute to give the West Country side a 3-2 win.
Two goals from Loughborough Students' Jo Duff gave her side a surprise win against Premier Division side Olton and West Warwick.
