Yet Westwood missed his birdie opportunity and bogeyed the par-four 11th, before coming undone again at the par-five 13th. The Ryder Cup star missed the fairway then overshot the green before chipping back across the putting area and into a bunker. He went on to two-putt for bogey, but a birdie at the 17th left the Englishman on three under after 18 holes. The co-leaders in the clubhouse were Americans Fred Couples and Justin Leonard on four under.
Ireland's Padraig Harrington resumed at level par after seven holes and stayed there after a topsy-turvy round which included six birdies. Greg Norman, 54, held his own with his younger rivals in a round of one-under.
England's Greg Owen and Luke Donald were among the first players back in the clubhouse, each having carded a one-over-par 73.
