Huge excitement as the Ryder Cup gets under way. Webb Simpson’s modest drive is dwarfed by Bubba Watson. Justin Rose’s turn, then Henrik Stenson, who is roared on as he hits his drive.
11.41: Europe 1-0 up
First blood to Europe! Rose and Stenson close out Watson and Simpson as Rose rolls in for a convincing 5&4 win. Europe’s opening pair have delivered for Paul McGinley’s side.
12.20: Europe 1-1 US
Ian Poulter, who has had a poor morning, misses a putt and it’s a poor defeat, as Mr Ryder Cup and Stephen Gallacher (right) are beaten 5&4 by the rookie pair Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed.
1pm: Europe 1½-1½ US
Jimmy Walker is faced with an eight-foot put to halve his and Rickie Fowler’s match against Thomas Bjorn and Martin Kaymer... and he slots it! US keep their cool under huge pressure. Game on!
1.49: Europe 1½-2½ US
Phil Mickelson has a two-footer for his match... and he makes no mistake. Mickelson and Keegan Bradley beat Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia. Huge result as the US take the overall lead.
2.23: McIlroy’s match starts
That was the fourballs, now for the foursomes. Fowler tees off in his match with Walker against McIlroy and Garcia. He hits an excellent drive and this is a key battle as Europe hunt points.
5.05: Europe 2½-2½ US
Jim Furyk hits an excellent chip at 18 (right) but it is in vain as Jamie Donaldson and Lee Westwood take the match over him and Matt Kuchar, winning 2 up. Europe are fighting back now.
5.24: Europe 3½-2½ US
Rose hits in a three-footer at 17 as the Englishman and Stenson take their match over Hunter Mahan and Zach Johnson 2&1. Impressive from Europe in tough conditions and they go ahead.
6.09: Europe 4-3 US
Fowler has a tough, uphill
15-footer to win the match, but he reads it wrong and cannot make it. McIlroy and Garcia, who managed to show their nerve, escape with half a point.
6.24: Europe 5-3 US
Graeme McDowell has a putt for the match... and curls it in!
McDowell and Victor Dubuisson seal a 3&2 win for Europe over Mickelson and Bradley. That caps a stunning day for the hosts. US reeling...
