Mickelson scalp for Howell
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Minutes after top seed Tiger Woods had been beaten by fellow American Chad Campbell on the final green, Howell completed a three and one victory over the world number five.
Three months after beating Woods head to head in Shanghai for the best strokeplay victory of his career, Howell was a superb four under par in the windy conditions as he advanced to the quarter-finals. Level with seven holes to play, he made a 45-foot birdie putt on the short 12th, Mickelson made a mess of the 14th, and the end came when the American, playing only a few miles from his home, bogeyed the 17th as well.
Of the two other Europeans through to the last 16 Padraig Harrington and Luke Donald the Irishman came through at the 19th hole when world number two Vijay Singh went in the sand, was short of the green in two and bogeyed.
But Donald could not make it three Europeans in the quarter-finals. A brilliant bunker shot by Retief Goosen at the last hole gave him victory.
