Coltart in line to end long wait
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Andrew Coltart moved into contention for his first European Tour win in three years in the Great North Open yesterday. The Scot hit his second 68 to join Bradley Dredge of Wales at the top of the leaderboard on eight-under par 136 midway through the second round.
Paul Casey of England was a stroke behind after a 66, his best round since turning professional in November last year, with Belgium's Nicolas Vanhootegem and England's Jamie Spence another stroke back on six under. Sweden's Olle Karlsson was three shots off the lead on five under after equalling the course record with a 65 after an opening 74.
Coltart won the Qatar Masters in 1998 and made his Ryder Cup debut two years ago but has not quite lived up to the promise he showed earlier in his career.
Lee Westwood hit a double bogey on the third, virtually ending his faint hopes of mounting a spectacular effort to make the cut and retain his title.
