Behind that pair are the Dutchman Tim Sluiter, a Tour rookie ranked 1,368th in the world. Martin Kaymer, the world No 3, is one under and Paul Casey was going well at four under until he strayed into thick rough and took a quadruple-bogey eight.
"I holed some great putts," said Boyd. "I've been working a lot on pace – the hole never comes to the ball, does it?"
