After making a bogey putt at the 18th hole, the 35-year-old native of Prince Edward Island was chased around the 18th green by several tour regulars who doused her with beer supplied by the tournament sponsor. "I think I waited my whole life for this," said a breathless Kane, who became the sixth first-time winner of the season.

Kane fought off a late charge by the LPGA money leader Karrie Webb, of Australia, to win the $120,000 (£79,500) first prize. She shot a one-under-par 71, one day after climbing to the top of the leaderboard with a bogey-free 66.

Kane's 54-hole total of 11-under 205 was one stroke off the tournament record, set in 1996 by Vicki Fergon, but it was three shots better than her first-round co-leader Kristi Albers, who closed with a 68. The timing was perfect for Kane, who returns to Canada for the season's final major, the Du Maurier Classic.
