Golf: Woosnam adds rider to cup
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Ian Woosnam is adamant that he will not keep playing tournaments this season just to ensure his place in the Ryder Cup team. Woosnam lies in 11th place, just out of the selection zone, and knows he is not guaranteed a wild card by captain Bernard Gallacher.
However, he showed yesterday in the Dutch Open at Hilversum that he can still get his game together when the pressure is on. He scored a 66 and goes into today's third round only four shots behind the leader, Scotland's Sam Torrance.
"I am playing next week and the week after, plus the US PGA Championship. But I won't keep playing just to get in the Ryder Cup," Woosnam said. "I have never had to be picked for the Cup. If I miss it then it is up to Bernard. It is his problem."
John Daly, the Open champion, also shot a 66 after a disappointing first round. He scored a string of birdies, including three in a row from the 10th.
Torrance came in with a magnificent 64 to finish 10 under. He recorded a glorious eagle three at the fourth and followed that with birdies at five and seven to go out in 32. Two bogeys on the back nine denied him a course record, although he got his second eagle of the day at the 12th.
