Golf: Torrance forced to share lead
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Torrance forced to share lead
Scotland's Sam Torrance shot a 72 and the New Zealander Michael Campbell a 69 to share the lead with a round to go in the Peugeot French Open in Paris. Torrance, leader since an opening 64, was three in front with two holes to play, but then double-bogeyed the 17th after a bad drive and three putts. Ahead of him, Campbell holed a 14-foot eagle putt at the last to go one ahead, but Torrance birdied the 514-yard 18th to join the Kiwi on the 10-under-par mark of 206. Joe Durant, who has missed six of 13 cuts and has failed to crack the top 10 in any tournament this year, shot a six-under par 67 to grab a one-stroke lead halfway through the Western Open in Illinois. Fiji's Vijay Singh was one stroke back after a second straight 68 for 136, while the first-round leader Greg Kraft and Lee Janzen, fresh from his second US Open victory, were two shots off the pace. England's Caroline McMillan fired a five-under par 66 to head a group of four golfers sharing the lead after one round of the Shoprite Classic in Atlantic City. McMillan is tied for the lead with Peru's Alicia Dibos, American Tina Barrett and Sweden's Annika Sorenstam.
