Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

AS RAIN disrupted the third round of the Scandinavian Masters at Forsgarden, near Gothenburg, yesterday, Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal upset the plans of Bernard Gallacher, Europe's Ryder Cup captain .

The Spanish pair confirmed they will not be playing in another European Tour event until after the Ryder Cup team has been chosen to meet the Americans at the Belfry next month.

So Ballesteros, at present 35th in the Cup points table, will have to rely on being given one of the three wild cards in the 12-member team, for the top nine points-scorers are automatic selections. Olazabal is eighth in the present list but may not stay in the top nine with four events still to go.

Gallacher, in Gothenburg himself, said: 'I'm not going to announce any wild cards until the week of the German Open.'

Peter Baker goes into today's final round with a three-stroke lead over the home player, Anders Forsbrand. Baker, 25 from Wolverhampton, shot a 68 for a l0-under-par 206. Stephen Ames of Trinidad and Tobago was on 210 with David Feherty.
