Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Gary Wolstenholme, the 35-year-old Walker Cup player from Bristol, yesterday beat Blackburn's Tony Jackson 6 and 5 in the first round of the English Amateur Championship at Nottingham, and was seven under par when the match finished on the 13th green. Fellow seed Mike Reynard followed up a record ninth club championship at Moseley with a 3 and 2 win over Clive Radford, concluding the match with one of five birdies on the 16th. Peter Fenton, the 22-year-old from Huddersfield, made a 5 and 3 triumph over Kent's Darren Bicknall to become the third seed to go through.
David Robertson moved into the second round of the J&B Scottish Amateur Championship across his home course of Dunbar yesterday with a comfortable 3 and 2 opening victory against Euan Little. The reigning champion, Simon Mackenzie, of West Linton, joined Robertson in moving through to the second round but was still not hopeful of becoming only the fourth player to retain the prestigious title. Roger Beames, of Wick, who suffered such a one hole defeat in the final of the British Amateur Championship at Turnberry in May, won his initial encounter over Paul Peyton, of Calcot Park, by a 4 and 2 margin.
