Golf: Montgomerie lines up a record
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Scot will take a commanding six-shot lead into today's final round of the Volvo Scandinavian Masters after scoring a round of 65. Montgomerie is now 17 under par, while his nearest challenger, England's Paul Broadhurst, is on 11 under. The defending champion, Jesper Parnevik, is a shot further back on 10 under. "I was looking for a 67 when I started today [Saturday] so it is a bonus to shoot 65," said Montgomerie. "I have never gone into a final round leading by six strokes so I don't think anyone is going to catch me - but the word complacency never enters my head. Darren Clarke lost a six-shot lead last week so it is possible, but if anyone beats me I'll be the first to shake their hand."
The pounds 166,000 first prize would almost certainly allow Montgomerie to hold off Lee Westwood's challenge in his race to top the European Order of Merit for the seventh successive season. Broadhurst shot a 68 as did David Carter, who now shares third place with Parnevik.
