Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

KAREN LUNN completed the second leg of an Australian double started by Greg Norman when she won an emphatic victory in the Weetabix British Women's Open with a final round of 67 over the Duke's course here yesterday.

Lunn, who almost gave up as a professional golfer 13 months ago, collected a pounds 50,000 winner's cheque when her 17-under-par total of 275 left her eight strokes clear of the American Brandie Burton with Scotland's Kathryn Marshall in third place on 286. A third round of 68 on Saturday had given Lunn a five-stroke cushion.

Lunn's transformation has been remarkable. She was persuaded to stick at the game by Laura Davies, who suggested that the Sydney golfer seek help from the Moor Park professional, Lawrence Farmer. He worked on building a more compact swing and with confidence restored Lunn then won the final tournament of last year and in Malaysia won the opening event of this season. The following week she lost a play-off against Davies in the Thailand Open, since when she has played on the LPGA Tour in America.

Yesterday the Australian never veered from her plan of playing aggressive golf. After a birdie at the fourth, it was at the 436-yard sixth hole where Lunn really turned the screw by striking a two-iron to within 30 feet for an eagle three. She put the issue beyond doubt with four birdies in five holes when she turned for home.
