Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

JEFF HALL, a 35-year-old from Bristol, expected to spend the weekend on holiday with his wife and three children in Marbella. Instead, he found himself out on his own at the head of the field after yesterday's first round of the Madeira Open in Funchal, the opening event of this year's European Tour.

Hall won the Jersey Open in 1992, but he dropped out of the Tour five years ago for economic reasons and is now a club professional in Italy. He only joined the entry list for Madeira on Monday, due to a late withdrawal.

'It was our first holiday for two years and when I was told that somebody had pulled out of the tournament I wondered whether to come. But my wife said 'Off you go'. ' Pulling his own trolley in the first group out, his reward was a seven-under-par 65, which gave him the lead by two strokes from Kent's Roger Chapman and by three from the Dane, Ole Eskildsen.

With Ryder Cup selection on the agenda, Sam Torrance had a two-under-par 70, Steve Richardson and Mark James both came in with 71, while Paul Broadhurst hit 72 and David Gilford scored 73, leaving him eight adrift.
