From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Hulk Hogan kicked off the show as he entered the arena to a thunderous ovation from the festive crowd. 'The Immortal One' reminded the fans that it was on Smackdown where he and Edge won his only Tag Team Championships and that Edge will be hosting Raw with Christian on Monday.

Before Hogan could continue, Seth Rollins interrupted to say that even though 'The Hulkster' was his hero growing up, it’s not the 80s anymore as the future is now here. Dolph Ziggler entered the void to tell Rollins that all he does is talk about he’s the future, 'Mr Money in the Bank' responded by warning the Intercontinental Champion that he will Curb Stomp him right there in front of Hogan. Big Show arrived on the scene to back Rollins but Roman Reigns then made his way through the crowd to address his unfinished business with 'The Worlds’ Largest Athlete'. Hogan resolved the tension by making a tag-team match between Big Show and Rollins and Reigns and Ziggler for later in the night.

Ryback took on Kane in a rematch from TLC where 'The Big Guy' won in a Chairs Match. Rusev’s music hit early on to cause a distraction but Ryback was still able to hold his ground and stay on top of 'The Big Red Monster'. Ryback landed the Shell Shock on Kane for the win as Rusev looked on in anger. There was no room for celebration as Rusev and Kane stomped on Ryback in a two on one attack. Kane landed a Chokeslam before Lana signalled for Rusev to crush the heavyweight. Rusev applied the Accolade as Ryback was left helpless with no support coming from the back.

Naomi took on Alicia Fox in a singles match as the commentators highlighted The Miz’ involvement in the development of Naomi’s showbiz career. Miz was shown watching his new business companion backstage while Naomi hit Fox with a spinning Backbreaker. Naomi finished the match with a split legged Moonsault and celebrated in the ring while Miz looked increasingly impressed with the display. Naomi may have lost her title shot on last week’s show but she’s back to her winning ways following Miz’ support on Raw.

Adam Rose took on R-Truth in a rematch from Raw where Rose lost and took his frustrations out on Bunny. Rose threw Truth shoulder-first into the ring post before landing the Party Foul to win the match in two minutes. There was no Bunny on site as Rose celebrated with the other members of The Exotic Express in the ring. There have been reports that Bunny’s identity will be revealed in the coming weeks with tensions between him and Rose now at boiling point.

Hogan sent Rusev to the ring to defend his United States Championship against a mystery opponent as punishment for his actions earlier in the night. The challenger turned out to be Dean Ambrose who stormed to the ring to a strong reaction from the audience. Ambrose climbed to the top rope to hit a flying elbow drop but it was only enough for a two count. 'The Lunatic Fringe' then went to land the Dirty Deeds but Rusev countered with a kick and rolled towards ringside. Ambrose threw 'The Big Russian' into the barricade but was suddenly side lined by Bray Wyatt for the referee to call for the disqualification. Wyatt went to put Ambrose through the table but 'The Eater of the Worlds' was met with a steel chair to the skull for Ambrose to divert the danger.

The Miz made his way to the ring accompanied by Damien Mizdow to take on Jimmy Uso who was joined by his brother Jey. Jimmy whipped Miz into the barricade before the two made their way into the ring; Miz pleaded with Jimmy to stop attacking and implied that he’s trying to help his family. Miz signalled for a truce through a handshake but received a double Superkick from Jimmy in response. Jimmy climbed the top turnbuckle to land the Suplerfly Splash to gain the victory on his rival.

Rollins and Big Show entered the ring to take on Ziggler and Reigns in the main event of the night, which was set up by Hogan. Ziggler was picked apart by his opposing team for most of the match before finally tagging Reigns in to switch up the momentum.

Reigns landed a Powerslam on Rollins but was unable to capitalise thanks to a distraction from J&J Security. Rollins dived through the ropes on to Reigns into the barricade while his security continued to hold the returnee down. Rollins signalled for the finish but Ziggler was able to take out Joey Mercury then hit Jamie Noble with a Superkick to level the odds. Reigns managed to find his feet and hit a Spear on Rollins to earn his side their last win in the final Smackdown of 2014.
