WWE fans delighted in a stroll down memory lane on Monday Night Raw as former WCW and WWE world heavyweight champion Goldberg returned to answer Brock Lesnar’s challenge to a match at Survivor Series next month.

As Goldberg’s famous music began to fill the Pepsi Center in Denver, fans repeated chanted his name until the wrestling legend appeared on the big screen. Making his trademark walk to the ring, various WWE Superstars of the current era lined the walkway and applauded the 49-year-old as he passed, and he received a huge reception upon his arrival through the smoke and pyrotechnics that greeted him.

Goldberg’s return is no surprise given that he is one of the new characters on WWE2K17, the new game that was released last week, but interest in his comeback ramped up last week when Paul Heyman challenged Goldberg to a fight on behalf of his client, Lesnar.

After suggesting to fans that one more match was not really in his interest, Goldberg performed a sudden U-turn to not only reveal his desire to be the “superhero” again that he once was, but to accept Lesnar’s challenge by warning him he’s next – and also “You’re last”.

“12 years ladies and gentlemen,” Goldberg said. “You never say never, eh? I never thought I’d be in this ring again, so thank you for the humble return. What makes it so special is that my wife and my son are here to see me live for the first time ever.

“As I said, it’s been 12 years, there is a lot of things that I miss in this business. The biggest thing that I miss – other than kicking ass – is being a superhero for the kids all around the world. In this day and age, there ain’t enough of us, so going around the world, promoting the video game gave me that opportunity. I could go to Germany, I could go to Toronto and I could go up to the kids and I could shake their hands and I could see it in their eyes that I was Goldberg. It gave me the opportunity to be that superhero again but unfortunately somewhere along the way I created a little drama back here at WWE.

“What that did was it made me think, and I thought long and hard, and I think that maybe it’s better left alone. Maybe I keep it in the video game.

“But then, Brock Lesnar challenged me to a fight, but he didn’t have the balls to do it himself! He made Paul Heyman, his fat little stooge do it for him. And I thought to myself ‘maybe I have one more ass-kicking left in me’. I thought to myself ‘maybe I have one badass Spear left in me’ and I thought to myself ‘maybe I have one last devastating Jackhammer left in me’.

“Brock Lensar, not only does that mean that you’re next, but most importantly it means Brock Lesnar, you’re last.”

Before Goldberg had finished enjoying the moment with his son, Gage, who was ringside with Goldberg’s wife Wanda, WWE confirmed that Lesnar would appear on next week’s Raw to personally respond to his former rival-turned next opponent.

The two legendary wrestlers clashed at WrestleMania XX, but while Goldberg emerged triumphant, the revelation that both were going to leave the WWE following that match left fans angry and uninterested in the bout. It culminated with special guest referee Stone Cold Steve Austin delivering a Stone Cold Stunner to both after the match.

However, despite his unsatisfactory exit, there has been a great clamour from fans to see Goldberg back in the ring, and the phenomenal reception he received on Raw demonstrates that he remains a fan favourite as he returns for ‘one more match’.
