It went down to the wire but the American-flagged Puma won the sixth leg of the Volvo round the world race from Itajai, Brazil, to Miami.

After a fierce fight lasting over 17 days Read stayed in front of the New Zealand-managed Camper from Spain.

Behind them, all expected to finish last night, were France’s Groupama, the overall leader, Spain’sTelefonica, and Abu Dhabi.

The British Olympic sailing team line-up has been completed with the selection of Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes making a second appearance in the 49er high performance skiff, Alison Young being given the place in the singlehanded Laser Radial and, in the paralympic classes, Helena Lucas driving the 2.4mR.
