From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Your support makes all the difference.Leeds hung on to their hopes of finishing the regular season on top of the table as two tries apiece from Brent Webb and Lee Smith helped them handsomely avenge two previous Super League defeats by Wigan. One consistent aspect of Wigan's inconsistent season has been the way they have
reserved their best League performances for Leeds.
There was a hint of more of the same when they opened the scoring last night with a length of the field try, Joel Tomkins picking up the loose ball after Webb and Trent Barrett had competed for Kevin Sinfield's kick. Leeds hit back when Webb went over from long range. Within a couple of minutes, they were ahead, thanks to Mark Calderwood hesitating when Danny McGuire put a kick behind the Wigan try line. Luke Burgess was quicker to react.
Wigan narrowed the gap when Tim Smith kicked for the corner and the ball was deflected back in field for Cameron Phelps to score. Immediately before half-time, Kylie Leuluai bludgeoned his way over to underline the control that Leeds had taken over the latter stages of the half. Wigan's start to the second half was even worse, allowing Kevin Sinfield's kick-off to find touch and then opening up for Webb to score his second. Some wonderful ball handling by Keith Senior and Jordan Pansey set up Ali Lauitiiti to stretch the lead still further.
Wigan got one back through Eamon O'Farroll, which swiftly led to another for Leeds, with Sinfield missing his conversion for the first time. Maguire's kick set up the final try for the 17-year-old Callum Watkins.
Wigan's coach Brian Noble admitted: "Leeds were pretty hot tonight and we couldn't handle them."
