Warriors and Wolves silent over future of Gleeson
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. Both clubs were playing their cards close to their chests last night over the possible transfer of Martin Gleeson from Warrington Wolves to Wigan Warriors.
The Great Britain and England centre is wanted by his home-town club, but their chief executive, Mick Hogan, said that they were not expecting to make any announcement.
Wigan have offered players in part-exchange, but Warrington may be more tempted by a straight money deal. The 28-year-old is under contract until the end of the 2010 season, but is understood to have an agreement with the Wolves that they will release him after this season if he has the option of playing in Australia, where he spent much of his youth.
Wakefield Wildcats are set to give their new signing, Frank Winterstein, his debut tomorrow night. The Samoa second row, who played for the Australian club, Canterbury, last season, only arrived on Saturday, but has gone straight into John Kear's 19-man squad for the Challenge Cup fourth-round tie against Leigh.
The Wildcats' reserve grade side will wear the name of their former team-mate, Leon Walker, on their jerseys for the rest of this season. Walker died during the game against the Celtic Crusaders at Maesteg 11 days ago and his funeral is in Leeds today.
