Souths have offered McRae a move upstairs as director of football in order to make Jason Taylor head coach on a two-year contract. Taylor, who has been caretaker coach at Parramatta since replacing Brian Smith in mid-season, had emerged as a favourite for the vacancy at the Sydney Roosters before Souths, who had already appointed him as assistant to McRae for next season, made their move to tie him down.
That could leave the way open for Anderson, who has denied any approach from the Roosters, but who is believed to be near the top of their wanted list.
McRae, the one man to have coached in each of the first nine years of Super League, including Gateshead's single season, has asked for seven days to decide whether to take up the offer of redeployment from Souths, who will finish last in the NRL after winning just three games so far.
Willie Poching retired yesterday after being ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury. The 32-year-old Leeds back-row forward had agreed a new 12-month contract, but will now take up a role on the Rhinos' back-room staff.
Sione Faumuina has been sacked by the New Zealand Warriors after an alcohol-fuelled incident at a match in which he was not playing. "There was an incident of serious misconduct and we met with Sione and terminated his contract," said the club's chief executive, Wayne Scurrah.
