Sherwin move 'not ideal' says Matterson

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Brent Sherwin has today completed his shock move to Catalan Dragons from Castleford Tigers, much to the disappointment of his former boss Terry Matterson.
Talking to The Independent's Rugby League podcast Tryline, Tigers head coach referred to financial considerations of the decision. At 32, Sherwin is getting to the autumn of his career and when Catalans came in for the player the offer was too good for the club to turn down. Although Matterson didn't want to loose his fellow countryman, the Australian also understands the approach from the Catalans.
He said: "Brent's got an opportunity there. The decision came from inside, it really wasn't from my side. They're obviously still in the Challenge Cup and they've got quite a lot of players out, so they came and made the club an offer and away it went."
Matterson now has the job of finding a replacement for the Australian scrum half but admits that it has not been the best of times for Sherwin at Castleford. The coach is on the look out for his replacement and expects to have a new man in for the weekend and that there could be a chance for someone from outside the current Super League to make a name for themselves. However, he was not willing to confirm the man, or men, he is interested in;
He said; "It's been an up and down sort of journey for Brent. Injury has really marred his stay here for two and half years and I wish him all the best out there. We're going to bring someone else in, give someone else an opportunity, someone who hasn't played in Super League before".
As an immediate replacement, the Tigers have brought in youngster Kyle Wood from Huddersfield Giants on a months loan. The 20 year-old half back/hooker is looking to make his mark in Super League after loan spells at Sheffield Eagles and Batley Bulldogs so far this term. His only top flight experience in 2010 came during a spell at Wakefield Wildcats.
Terry Matterson, the former London Broncos player, also talks to Tryline about his freak injury at a pre-season training camp, views about his former club, now called Harlequins RL, and their efforts to get more bodies through the gate for matches and Castleford's need for a new stadium to compete in the Super League.
